The construction of the 182-Meter tall statue has been completed after round-the-clock work by 3,400 Labourers and 250 engineers at sandhu bet island on Narmada River in Gujarat. It is about 3.5 km away from the Narmda dam. A 250-Meter long bridge has been built to increase the connectivity to the island.
The core of the statue is made up of reinforced concrete. 553 Bronze panels from China cover its exterior initially the total cost of the project was estimated to be amount of ₹ 3,001 Crore by the government of india.
Larsen and Toubro won the project contract in Oct 2014 with its lowest bid of ₹2,989 Core for the design, construction and maintenance. Most of the money for the statue, funded on Public-Private Partnership basis, was raised by The Government Of Gujarat. The work on the statue started in Dec 2013.
The statue has a viewing gallery at a highest of 193 meters from sea level. It can accommodate 200 visitor at a time. It comprises the Shrestha Bharat Bhavan, Which is 3 Star lodging facility consisting 52 room. Two high speed lifts will take people to the viewer's gallery.
The museum showcasing the life of Sardar Patel is at the base. It will have 40,000 documents , 2000 photographs and a Research center dedicated to Sardar Patel's Life.
Two 'tents cities' with 250 tents are also planned to accommodate tourists arriving in this tribal-dominated area. Many Flowers will be grown on the hill rocks adjoining the statue to make 230 Hectares area look like 'Beautiful valley of flower'.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has unveiled the Statue of Unity, built as a tribute to freedom movement icon Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 143rd birth anniversary.
